We all have things or situations that we’re a little scared of. Mine seem to go through phases. At one point the dentist, then flying, then the dentist again,...
Thank goodness for the technology that allows us to watch TV, regardless of whether we own one or not. Nowadays, TV programmes are wonderfully accessible on so many mediums that it’s easier than ever to keep up with your favourite shows. As an avid consumer, I often find myself empathising with many of the characters, particularly the female variety. And let’s be honest here – there are some fantastic female TV characters out there. So without further ado, here are my top picks of female TV stars we can all relate to at some point in our lives:
1. Jess Day from ‘New Girl’ – The Chic Geek
Jess isn’t the coolest cube in the tray, but that’s okay. She embraces her kookiness and makes it work for her. Miss Day also rocks the cutest jumper-skirt combos. And you should, too.
2. Mindy Lahiri from ‘The Mindy Project’ – Smart ‘n’ Sassy
A neurotic gynecologist who keeps it real. Mindy’s one liners are legendary, just one example being, “If I’m going to be a mess, I might as well be a hot mess!” Even with a PhD, Dr L’s life isn’t straight-forward (but it’s always hilarious)
3. Marnie Michaels from ‘Girls HBO’- The Angsty One
After her on-off boyfriend hit the permanent “off” switch, Marnie’s whole life was turned upside down. Oh, and she got fired. She’s the mid-twenties go-to gal when nothing in the world seems to be going right.
4. Lucy Watson from ‘Made in Chelsea’ – The Resting Bitch Face
Because sometimes your “As if” thoughts – a la Cher in Clueless – cannot be contained and instead manifest in your face. Hey, it’s not your fault people are like, so pathetic.
5. Samantha Jones from ‘Sex and the City’ – The Brazen One
Because sometimes your inner Samantha just has to come out.
6. Cassie Ainsworth from ‘Skins’ – The Dreamer
With her head permanently in the clouds, Cassie is a classic case of “Manic Pixie Girl” (YouTube it). Dreams are great, but be careful to make sure your mind doesn’t run away with you.
7. Miranda Hart from ‘Miranda’ – Clumsy but Endearing
Ever lost your balance trying to stand up straight? You can bet Miranda has, and then some. It’s fine, though – you can numb the pain over a bottle of wine or two (just try not to fall off the sofa).
8. Dowager Countess of Grantham from ‘Downton Abbey’ – The Snob
Oh, come on, we’ve all been there. Even the most kind-hearted of us will have been mortified by quite how scathing we can be when the moment (or person) presents itself. Oops.
9. Blair Waldorf from ‘Gossip Girl’ – The Driven One
The A-Game is the only game, because you’re a winner, and winners don’t quit. You won’t let anyone get in the way of your success (okay, maybe Chuck Bass) and your workwear wardrobe is enough to make Ivanka Trump weep.
10. Rory Gilmore from ‘Gilmore Girls’ – The Caffeine Addict
Those books won’t read themselves, am I right? And those deadlines aren’t going to get any further away. As long as the percentage of caffeine in your system exceeds the percentage of blood, you’ll be at optimum functionality.
11. Piper Chapman from ‘Orange is the New Black’ – The Fish Out of Water
Being the newbie is the worst, especially when being a newbie involves an orange jumpsuit and aggressive neighbours. Suddenly being the new one at work doesn’t seem so bad anymore, does it?
Sofie-Eliza currently works in online editorial and moonlights as a sometimes amusing, mostly angsty blogger. She’s a self-confessed crazy cat lady, lover of all things sparkly, with an addiction to refreshing her social media feeds. Her hobbies include reading, writing, watching intellectual TV shows such as Made in Chelsea and working her way through Twinings herbal tea offerings. She wishes she was a Jessa, but is coming to terms with the fact she’s a frustrating hybrid of Hannah and Marnie.
