Hair is such a big symbol. Perhaps it shouldn’t be? We throw so much weight onto how we look and how, that in turn, makes us feel that we often gift our hair...
It’s the time of year that divides us all: the party season. Whether you love it or loathe it, one of the realities is that there’s no avoiding the Christmas work ‘do. It’s enough to bring the best of us out in a cold sweat. How do you transform yourself from professional to party? How do you lift your hair from limp to luscious? And most importantly… how do you make the most of your prep time?
So to save you entering a full scale panic this year don’t worry: we have you covered. Pour yourself some mulled wine (and maybe grab a mince pie, for good measure) and read our guide on how to go from work to party in under 60 minutes.

5:30pm: We’re all about that base, ’bout that base
By the end of the day, skin can look quite dull, shiny and grey. Rather than layering on more product (which feels gross, let’s face it), start afresh. Nip to the loos and wipe everything off easily with some facial wipes, then apply a low to medium coverage foundation to keep things radiant. If needed, get extra coverage with a creamy concealer. For oily complexions, apply a primer beforehand.
Out top beauty-base picks:
For the perfect base: Shupette Tsuya Skin UV Under Base Mousse
For beautiful coverage: MAC Mineralise Moisture SPF Foundation
For a little something extra: NARS Immaculate Complexion Concealer
5:38pm: Ready, set…
The last thing you want is your face melting off as your shake your thing on the dancefloor. Setting your make up is super important. Opt for either a powder the same shade as your foundation, or an invisible powder.
Our top picks:
5:40: Let’s get cheeky
Contouring, although effective, can take time. Instead, add a pop of colour to your complexion with a powder blush (cream blushes are great, but aren’t as long-lasting). Choose a shade that warms the complexion. Tip: coral shades are flattering to all skin tones.
Best blushing picks:
For thrifty girls: Revlon Blush Classy Coral
For splashing out: Benefit Coralista Blusher
5:42: Power pout
Resist the temptation to go straight for the kill! Line lips first with an invisible lip liner (it saves the hassle of trying to match your liner to your lippie) to prevent bleeding. Keep lips well moisturised to ensure the colour glides on smoothly and seal colour by dabbing with a tissue. If desired, build colour for more intensity and for lips that demand a smooch…
5:48: She’s got Betty Davis eyes
Smoky eyes are a party fave, but can sometimes leave you looking smudged, not seductive. Opt for a palette that has shades ranging from light to dark to create drama, and finish with a slick of eyeliner and lashings of mascara. To prevent clumps, work on alternate eyes as each layer of mascara dries.
Top beauty picks:
5:55pm: Make like Cara Delevingne
To save time, pluck any unruly hairs the night before (or if you can’t trust your tweezer happy self, pop to a salon). If your brows are full and defined already, just brush them through with a clear brow gel to set them in place. Otherwise, define and fill brows to complete your look.

5:59pm: You shall go to the ball!
With a minute to spare, spritz perfume (go for an EDP, as EDTs will wear off after an hour or so) on your collarbone, behind your neck and wherever else your please. Mist a setting spray over your makeup for good measure and maybe some hairspray to keep your blowdry in check!
Et voila Cinderella. You’re ready to go to the ball!
