There’s a well-known Will Smith quote about a treadmill, that makes me really want to get up and go out and work. If you haven’t heard it, and seriously, put down the Netflix if you haven’t, it goes like this:

“The only thing that I see distinctly different about me is I’m not afraid to die on a treadmill. I will not be out worked, period. You might have more talent than me, you might be smarter than me, you might be sexier than me, you might be all of those things you got on me in nine categories. But if we get on the treadmill together, there’s two things: You’re getting off first, or I’m going to die.”

I love this quote because it’s not Will Smith, an acting god, who has bottled the essence of youth, saying how great he is, how talented, or even how lucky – a true opt out of acknowledging success. But it is Will Smith saying, this is it, this is the one thing which I am nailing, which I am completely excelling at and which no one will ever match me on – because I won’t let them. I’ll work harder and longer and to excess until I’ve got this, in every way, shape or form.

This type of conviction is essential. It doesn’t matter how many times you doubt yourself, doubt what you’re doing or feel as though you’re not doing as well as everyone else, you need one complete conviction that there is something unique about you that makes you better than everyone else. This is the thing that in a job interview is your answer when they say ‘why should I choose you over x, y or z’. It’s also what you go to bed with at night – satisfied that no matter how many times you might have fucked up, this is the thing you have got. It’s what pulls you up when you feel like you’re drowning in a swamp of sadness like Atreyu’s horse in The Neverending Story.

So today I wanted to ask – what makes you better than everyone else? Do you work harder? Refuse to take no for an answer? Are you 100% committed to detail? Will you proofread something to within an inch of its life? Do you just love living more than everyone else? Are you escaping so hard that you’re better at travelling than anyone else from the Western world?

Find your conviction. Find what it is that makes you better and then work at it each and every single day until you are the best.

And me? It’s my thirst. I’m thirsty for knowledge, to learn, improve, better myself, know more and find out everything there is to find out. And I’ll bloody-well drink you all under the table with it if I have to.
