Hair is such a big symbol. Perhaps it shouldn’t be? We throw so much weight onto how we look and how, that in turn, makes us feel that we often gift our hair...
Winter staples are the ideal canvas on which to try a new look, making this season the perfect time of year to experiment with beauty and hair trends. To help you get creative, we’ve put together some of this season’s hottest new beauty looks, straight from the AW14 catwalks, which will help you to change up your look, with minimal effort and at low cost.
1. Berry lips
A Berry lip is the ideal day-to-night transformation this Winter, helping you to go from work to party in a few easy strokes. The key to the AW14 version is to keep it matte – leave the gloss at home and instead line the lip with a pencil, before filling it in carefully with a matte shade in berry red, purple or deep pink. This look suits all skin types and can be worn with a slight shadow on the eye, or a bold outline a’la Naomi below.

2. Metallic Eyes
Gold, bronze and silver shadows were used across the catwalk for AW14, creating a look that is much easier to master than the traditional smokey eye. For this trend, experiment with hues and keep the rest of the makeup neutral, allowing the eyes to pop in all of their metallic glory.
Best product? The Bourjois Intense Smoky Eyeshadow Pallet in Rose Twist
3. Bold Defined Lashes
Doll-like defined lashes were present everywhere for the AW14 catwalk shows, bringing Sixties inspiration with thickly lined lashes and jet-black mascara. To get it right, line the top lash along the lid with black eyeliner and blend in with a matte black or dark brown shadow. Then curl lashes and line with mascara, building up layer by layer until you have thickly lined lashes that are flutter-perfect.
Best product? No 7 Extreme Length Mascara in Black From Boots
4. Glowing skin
One of the trends that has been present in 2014 and will continue for 2015, is radiant, glowing skin with just a hint of colour. To get this look, use highlighter or a light concealer across the nose, centre of the chin, forehead and across the brow bones to create a central glow. Next, add a slightly darker foundation, concealer or bronzer to create depth, in a “3” shaped movement from the centre of your forehead, around the hairline, coming in underneath the cheekbone and then back out around the jawline. Finish with a light, creamy foundation or cream and add a blush of colour to the apples of the cheeks, followed by a light dusting of translucent powder to seal the look.
Best product? bareMinerals Finishing Powder Mineral Veil available at LoveLula
5. Nude Nails
Long-gone are the bright pastels of this summer, the upcoming trend for Autumn 2014 and SS15 is undoubtedly paired-back nails in simple shapes and pale nudes, creams and pinks. From creamy blush, to rose and pale beige, there’s a colour to suit every skin type and it is one of the easiest trends to get right. The key to a smooth, natural finish is all in the preparation, so massage cuticles with olive or almond oil and buffer off any rough edges before adding a base, two coats of your chosen polish and a top coat to seal.
Best product? Essie nail polish in Innocent
