A few Fridays ago, I was at work as usual. It was about 9.30am and I was kicking about in my usual Friday attire; casual jeans, an off-the-shoulder sequin jumper and chunky boots. The only thing on my mind, was the list I needed to get through and the bottle of wine waiting for me at home that evening, probably with its friend: the Domino’s Meat Lover. And then comes the call. An invitation to a sellout event. An event I would have loved, loved, loved to have booked onto, but which sold out in about 72 hours. A spare ticket with my name on it. Never one to miss out on an opportunity I, of course, said yes. Before realising that I had absolutely nothing to wear to it with me at work, bar the clothes on my back. WHY wasn’t I wearing my amazing all-occasion black swing dress? Why couldn’t I have thrown on my smart coat and perhaps a casual fur wrap that morning? This outfit was not event-appropriate and I would have to find something to do about it.

If you’ve ever been in this situation (and I’m sure you have) you’ll know that you never want to leave yourself short again.

Queue the SOS work capsule-kit.

These are the five items that every girl should have below her desk, to keep her safe over the party season. These are the five items that can be paired with practically anything you wear to work, in order to liven it up and make it any-occasion ready. In a nutshell, they’re the items I wish I’d kept with me that day at work and which I vow never to leave behind again!

Book them in to your desk area now; you won’t regret it.

The Smart Shoe

If, like mine, your office is fairly casual, you’ll know that work footwear can range from a pair of chunky Docs to your latest New Balance, depending on how hungover you are that day. While these look casual and cool jumping on the tube, they’ll certainly not be your first choice should a last-minute client dinner, meeting or event come up. This is where the SOS-capsule item number 1 comes in: the smart shoes. A pointy pair of flats, or shiny loafer that can be slipped in your bag, ready to change into at the last minute, are all you need to smarten up any jeans or tights-type outfit.

Our top picks?

The classic Russell and Bromley Lace-Up Brogue in Black

These wear-with-anything Black Asos Limerick Ballet Flats

The Stand Out Blazer

The trick to defining and shaping any outfit, is to pick out the perfect blazer, preferably one that’s hanging on the back on your chair, just ready to pop on and get going. Black may be the first, most obvious choice but hang on a minute, what if the rest of your wardrobe is a palette of blues, blacks and greys? In this case, it’s better to go for something bright, a pop of colour or pattern that will look smart while livening up your look. A brightly coloured blazer may be just the confidence you need as you head out the door.

The best ones to go for?

This Powder Pink, cropped blazer from ASOS is everything you need

This printed, black and white checked Blazer from Zara will go with everything

The Failsafe Black Court

The black court is a classic good-looking shoe, that you can run in. Now how often does that happen? Team it with even the most baggiest of jeans and it will still look Parisian Chic. Leave a pair of these under your desk and you’ll never be caught short again (excuse the pun) when that last minute invitation comes knocking at your door.

New Look are without-a-doubt the best place to head to for a brilliantly stylish black Court that doesn’t break the bank. Out top pick being these £24.99 Pointed Black Court Shoes

The All In One Balm

Your office drawer may be a mess of half-empty lipglosses, eyeliners and powder blushes, but when it comes down to it, you may not have the time, or the finesse, to give yourself a 30 minute makeover. If nothing else, ensure that you always stock an all-in-one balm that can double, or even triple up, as a moisturiser, lip balm and eye gloss in one.

Our favourite?

Balm Balm’s Rose Geranium Lip Balm. It’s 100% organic, contains absolutely no nasty chemicals and can be used to nourish your lips and just about any other part of your body too. Use it to cast a glossy sheen across lips and eyes, for dabbing on dry patches and even as a super-quick hair balm for sealing dry ends just before you head out.

The Bright Lip

If you don’t have any other clothes with you and are lacking in the shoe department, a fail safe never-not-nice rule is to add a bright lip. It’s something you can pull out no matter where you are and which will instantly brighten things up, helping you to exclude confidence and generally add a polishing touch to your outfit.

Best colours?

For extra confidence and flair, add a red lip – we love the Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick for extra moisturising goodness
